RE: Abandoned Pit Bulls

Oh trust me, small dogs can & do bite. The stories about that just don't make for good hysteria provoking media.
There was recently a very tragic situation here in NE Oklahoma... a three month old lab puppy was left in a room alone with a tiny infant (I think he was 5 weeks old) and the puppy mauled the baby, killing it. They think the pup was attracted to the baby's dirty diaper. :(
Now I ask you, my friend, does that mean that all labs or lab mixes are killers? My answer of course, is no, but it does tell me that baby's parent made a huge, tragic mistake. One she will have to live with for the rest of her life. I can't imagine the horror.
I guess I could paint with a broad stroke about the breed or the parents but I honestly try to look at these kind of situations on a case by case basis, keeps me more objective that way.
Looks like we'll (sooner than I thought) get to the nature versus nurture debate. It's highly unlikely that you will change your already made up mind, but some food for thought, nurture has a lot to do with how any dog will act & react... just like it does with all animals/mammals, including humans.

RE: My little Doxie is very sick. Cause unknown.

Congratulations on your new dog! :) Thanks for rescuing!! I almost didn't notice your post since it was on this thread but I'm glad I did.
Having fostered and adopted former puppy mill breeder dogs I can tell you that time, patience, love, patience, understanding, patience will help you teach your new arrival to be well loved pet. The best case scenario with a former breeder dog is to have another dog in the house that they can bond to... the established dog helps speed the process of learning to trust humans since the new arrival will watch it interact with the two leggers and learn from watching. Since you have two dogs I think that will help a lot. You might find that one of your established dogs will sort of adopt the newcomer and help it learn the way around it's new life. One of ours did and she was very sweet, patient, & helpful to the scared fosters.
If the dog acts as if it doesn't understand or is afraid to be touched then sit quietly near it whether it is in the crate or not and then after a few days sit a bit closer, etc. It will learn that you are trustworthy and mean it no harm. It will take quite a while before the new dog will be ready to learn to walk on a leash so take that slowly. It's world has just grown by gigantic proportions and it is intimidating. As you might guess from my experience with these formerly caged dogs I do believe in establishing TRUST first and then teaching it how to be a pet in due time.
Done properly using lots of patience this will not reinforce a fear response it will have the exact opposite affect and teach the dog that what it is fearful of (you and it's new larger strange world) are OK and can be enjoyed.
If you have any specific questions or concerns that you think I might be able to help with please feel free to PM me.
Best wishes and THANKS again for rescuing your new dog. Watching a dog like this transform into a well behaved, much loved pet is life changing. Get ready for it, you will be amazed at how resilient this dog can be! :)

RE: Abandoned Pit Bulls

Like anything in life.... it's best not to paint with too broad a stroke.
For example, not all pit bull owners fight their dogs or teach them to be aggressive, just like not all fuzzbutt dog owners treat their dogs like humans. Which of course means that not all (so called) pit bulls are aggressive and not all fuzzbutt dogs are ill mannered & spoiled. We've had many similar conversations/debates on this and other message boards, for years as a matter of fact. It is my opinion that we/you can't just lump all dogs of certain breeds or their owners into one big negative category, especially based on media hype.
Not all dog owners would abandon their dogs or give them up to a shelter just because they were moving. It is clearly not the fault of the dogs that they are in this bad situation... so no matter what breed they are I'm glad someone stepped up to help.

RE: Abandoned Pit Bulls

My thanks to you and your daughter for stepping up and helping these abandoned dogs. Shame on anyone who leaves their dogs behind like that!
I would look to the breed specific rescue groups for help, no matter the breed or mix, typically they do the best job rehoming into a permanent loving home.
Best wishes in your efforts, please keep us updated!

RE: Bathroom stops for a cat

When I've taken a cat with me on longer trips, like when we moved here from Texas I brought three along, I put them in a carrier large enough for a small pan of litter. I found the small rectangular foil cake pans work very well and you can either clean them upon arrival or throw them away. Sometimes cats get nervous during travel and they need to go more often. Your cat may or may not "need" to go but if there is a litter pan in the carrier she will have that option.
There are plenty of pet friendly motels these days if you choose to stay in a motel rather than your TT. If it were me I would just find a place to park & stay in the TT.... if not possible then I would choose a pet friendly motel.
Best of luck, I hope you ALL have a great trip! :)

RE: Jessica Simpson? real or a joke?

It seems like she is real enough to get a lot of attention... and perhaps fake in all the right places to get even more. :W :)
I saw her perform at a high school football game (our high school was playing their's, we lived near her childhood home) before she was famous/infamous. She sang our national anthem and did it very well. She really has a decent voice but perhaps her changes in style, etc., aren't everyone's cup of tea. She has been marketed well, no doubt about it.

RE: Think twice about speeding in Oklahoma construction zones

Gee, I think that its harder to speed in Oklahoma than any other state......Anything over 35 mph and you get your teeth shaken out on their roads.
I absolutely............. agree!!
Of all the things that need done in our great state road repairs should be a top priority!

RE: Mik Kids First Day of School

Great pictures Julie!!
It is always fun to be able to recall those "milestones" with pictures... one of these days Aaron will look at that one and maybe even smile. :W :)
Girls are more social and it seems like they are typically happier to get back to school, looks like Erica & Abby are ready to see all their friends again.

RE: K9 TRISHA RAINBOW BRIDGE

Carl & Pap.... I am so sorry to hear about your beloved companions. All of us know how hard it is to say farewell to one of our pets. My heart goes out to you during this time.
With Sympathy
They will not go quietly,
the pets who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still can make us
think we hear them at the door
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And,sometimes,coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them...
and always will.

RE: Brought Cookie home today, one day early

Cookie is very cute, but then again I have a thing for fuzzbutt dogs! :) It looks like the two of them (your dogs) will get along just fine, just to be sure they will need a lot of supervision over the next few weeks. Oreo will need a bit of extra loving for a while but I'm thinking they will do great.

Until then, good thoughts & prayers coming from Oklahoma.

RE: I enjoyed lunch with a new forum friend today!

LOL Tamra "got along like a house on fire", love it, but that must be a Cornhusker expression! :W :) We've PM'd & e-mailed a lot lately so I felt like I knew you already. We have another restaurant picked out for you to try next time, right? One thing about it, Tulsa has some good places to eat.
I'd love to meet all the people I talk with via e-mail, PMs and on the phone but like I said darned logistics can be challenging. Someday... someday... someday. :B

Very sorry to hear about your accident! Ouch!! I bet there is a lot of pain involved in your injuries, so sorry! It sounds like you are receiving good care from everyone, isn't it nice to have those kind of people in our lives?
I hope you and Amy recover as quickly and completely as possible. Y'all will be in my thoughts & prayers.

Hey Mike! Yep, she's a die hard fan, just like you. :) We've tried to get together with y'all but so far no luck. How about that weekend later this month?? I think Tamra is going to come up for the day on Saturday. You might want to check the other forum.

RE: Utah trip & Bad Gas

I'm glad to know y'all made it back safely, too bad about the bad fuel. I'm glad you were able to get the help you needed.
When I read the title "Utah trip & Bad Gas" I guess I thought about my DH and wondered if you meant you had eaten something that gave you bad gas..... stuck together on the road that can be challenging. LOL I won't tell you exactly how I know but let's just say.... I know. :W :)
